These are just three modes of persuasions, so how can three simple things take up 328 pages? Easy, by presenting them in many different situations that happen in everyday lives seen through the eyes of Aristotle, Homer Simpson, toddlers, adults, etc. Of course, that is exactly what Heinrichs did when he wrote Thank You For Arguing. In fact, Heinrichs illustrates the ins and outs of rhetoric by giving detailed examples of how to subtly place it in an argument. For example, a rhetoric tool called Chiasmus, which reverses a concept or a phrase to put a different meaning behind it, is placed in a discussion about politics: “You: ‘We’re being falsely accused in a grandstanding move so some prosecutors and bureaucrats can score some easy points.’ Or you could put it in a chiasmus. You: ‘It’s not a question of whether we’re cheating the government. It’s whether the government is cheating us” (290). This shows how Heinrichs puts rhetorical tools in the contents to display the contrast of how the argument is with or without …show more content…
In just the second chapter, Heinrichs points this out and gives smart tools to help you figure out just what to do in an argument before you even start. The second chapter is about figuring out what the reader wants out of the argument and what to manipulate in the opponent to bend them towards the reader’s argument. Heinrichs gives examples of situations that most readers would find very interesting to win in such as: How to Seduce a Cop, and How to Manipulate a Lover. Heinrich then says, “ To win a deliberative argument, don’t try to outscore your opponent. Try instead to get your way”(19), by which he explains that when an opponent has a title or feel of aggression over you, to use it as a tool. Use that title or ego against them by making them feel differently, or as Heinrichs puts it, change their mood at your will. In essence, identifying all the tools that one could use and figuring out the situation is the key to winning an argument, because if you do not know what to use it, how could you win.
