1. What are your personal and academic reasons for wishing to participate in this Dialogue of Civilizations program?
Everyone always says that college is one the best times to really get out of your comfort zone and explore what the world has to offer. One of the many reasons I chose to attend Northeastern University was the fact that it allows its students to really explore their learning styles in different environments without limitations. Students are allowed to participate in co-op, classes and even volunteer opportunities in places all around the world, multiple times over the course of their college experience, if they choose to do so. What courses have you taken which are directly relevant to the program?
Although this Dialogue of Civilizations program focuses on upper level accounting courses, there are many different types of courses that can be directly relevant to such a program. I’ve taken courses related to this program for several years, so I believe I would be well prepared to endure the academic and cultural experiences.
Academically, since this is an accounting specific program, I would say that all of my required accounting classes have allowed me to build up my knowledge on the subject. The class that developed my understanding of what accounting really is and how it is externally used was financial accounting. It allowed me to grasp the concepts of debits and credits, financial statements, and the accounting cycle. I then took managerial accounting, which taught me about internal reporting. It focused on cost analysis of products and services, budget plans, and performance reports. I was then able to see how these accounting concepts are linked into the financials of a business through my financial analysis and reporting 1 class. For me, this class was a mix of financial and managerial accounting, which then went more into depth while also introducing new topics. In all of these classes, most especially financial reporting and analysis 1, I was shown how accounting practices under the Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) compare and contrast from that of the International Financial …show more content…
The first of which would be my international business class. There, I was able to learn about how business is affected by the social, political and economic environments in a country. I did many country comparisons, including Spain, to see that things like communication styles, work hours, holidays, business attire, etc. can differ greatly. I hope to be able to see such difference in person through this dialogue as we will be observing their holidays and engaging with the European business community. The other classes I’ve taken that will be helpful to me during this program are my Spanish classes. I’ve taken Spanish language classes for six years and I can still remember a great deal of what I learned. My goal during this experience would be to be able to use as much of the native language as I can to communicate with those of the area. Overall, I think all of these classes are directly relevant to this program, both academically and culturally, and I really hope to see first-hand how relevant they really
