 Why did you decide to go to school at NIU?

I worked as a teacher in Poland for 12 years. When I immigrated to the U.S., it was obvious to me that I needed to start going to school and obtain a teaching certificate in order to be able to get a “normal” job. The Board of Education gave me a credit for my Bachelor degree, I could also apply for a deficiency letter, and if I did, I wouldn’t have to take all classes which I do now. However, I decided to complete the MAT program, and get a degree from an American university, so there wouldn’t be any doubts concerning my education. I chose NIU because the tuition was cheaper comparing to other universities and the NIU campus is really close to my house.

In America, when you go to college, you write a lot. In Poland we don’t write so much, so I’m simply not get used to writing reflections and take part in online discussions, etc.; it sometimes doesn’t make any sense to me and I view it as a waste of time. So, this aspect is more difficult. However, when we have exams, our professors always give us some study guides, which makes preparations for the exam much easier. In Poland that was unthinkable that my professors did something like that. I never knew what the content would be on the test and we had to learn everything. That was harsh and a huge waste of time. Also, in Poland, most of the projects and assignments were made individually, while here many of the projects are based on the group work. That’s a pain for me because I prefer to work individually – it’s a part of my personality, but also the groups I have had so far, consisted of very irresponsible people and I always had to do more than

When I first started university, I had to go to an advising session; while, I do not remember what it was about, The one thing that managed to grab my attention was when the advisor said “I can spot a freshman a mile away” when someone asked her how, she replied” just search for people who look lost and confused”. It struck a chord deep within me because I was really lost and confused, not only that but also anxious, friendless, and afraid of all the responsibilities and of the possibility of failing. While my family assured me that these obstacles are the key element in becoming more responsible, and overcoming them will allow me to discover my strengths and weaknesses. I, on the other hand, felt like these obstacles were not character builders, but more like energy and time consumers that affected the academic performances and health of both my peers’ and myself. I strongly believe that fixing these problems should be one of the university’s priorities.…

It is a bit surreal to think that I will be a senior at Endicott College in the fall. It feels as if just yesterday that I was 17-years-old, applying to colleges and hoping that once I secured a face-to-face interview, that I would be able to explain why my grades suffered my freshman year of high school. I was hoping that once in an interview that a reputable college would take a chance on me, to take into consideration the bullying I endured, for me to showcase my academic abilities. Endicott was that school. In 2013, I graduated Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School and never looked back.…

Two examples are “[his] dean will not call and ask how many conferences [he had] with [students] parents about [their subject mastering] progress” and “the content and format … include[s] … little or no test preparation.” The approach of not preparing students for exams is understandable under the notion that they will study on their own time. On the contrary, still, there are those who are ill-equipped on how to study and need any help from the professor. A study conducted by Harvard University showed results, of only 56% of four-year college students obtaining college degrees (Symonds, "Pathways to Prosperity” ). The findings are manifest of higher education norms.…
