When a college or organization looks at an athlete what do you think they look at first? You would think that it would be their mixtape that shows just how much skill they possess, right? Wrong. The correct answer would be their social media profile. This information will give most organizations a great idea of just who they are scouting based on what they share on social media sites as well as their interactions with others on outlets such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or other commonly used social media apps. Not only does social media create an image for an athlete and an organization, but it also plays into the chemistry of the team as well as the athletes long term future.
You may ask why I am so concerned with the issue of social media involvement within sports especially since I am not an athlete anymore. Well the answer lies in what I wish to do with my future. One key example comes in the form of alumni donations. Why would an alumni of a university give money while it is currently in the headlines for a scandal or one of it’s athletes publishing negative content for everyone to see? Most of them will be discouraged from donating during times notorious with trouble being caused by current students. Also, the team may be reeling if one of its members is not allowed to play due to sanctions that are placed to discipline the student. This may hurt the team’s chance of long term success. While it may not be the best or most promising player on a team that is under fire for his actions, it still may take a large toll on how the team plays based on the team 's chemistry and who plays well with
