The three important symbols in Lord of the Flies are the conch, Piggy's glasses, and the signal fire. All of these symbols are a major key in the development of the story. The conch is first known as what brought everyone together to have meetings then it shattered. For the next symbol, the boys used Piggy's glasses in hope of making a fire and it ended up a success, but then after Jack took his glasses for granted and cracked one of the lenses. Lastly, the signal fire was there so that the boys could have a way off the island but after the tribe split up the fire got out of control like the boys did and is used for hurting or at least trying to hurt Ralph near the end. Imagine being stranded on this island, that would be frightening stuck

I think the most important symbol in Lord of the Flies is the conch shell. After Ralph found it, Piggy taught him how to blow into it and all the boys on the island gathered, they established that the conch shell would be the signal to have an assembly. This was very important tool to keep order among the boys. As some of the boys became rouge and wouldnt listen to the conch shell, the order on the island began to fall apart. The conch shell was one of the reasons they finally were…

Lord of the Flies (LOTF) is an unusually violent coming-of-age novel written by William Golding, about a large group of british boys who are stranded on an island all by themselves after their plane is shot down, and are faced with the unthinkable. There are many theories as to what the core message of this novel truly is; some believe that LOTF is a metaphor for the horrors that Golding witnessed during his service in WWII(this is undoubtedly the most popular theory due to the total lack of girls); a declaration of nihilism; a metaphor for the garden of eden; or that it shows the true capacity for evil that lurks within the souls of men, and the rotting pig head represents our moral depravity. I, on the other hand believe the theory that all of the character are allegories (or symbols). Ralph and Piggy together are civilization, Piggy by himself is intelligence (he also represents rationalism, but we’ll get back to that) and his glasses are technology: when the boys steal Piggy’s glasses rather than…

The biggest symbol in The Lord of the Flies is the pig’s head, referred to as the Lord of the Flies – to which the novel borrows its namesake from. The Lord of the Flies is described as "dim-eyed, grinning faintly, blood blackening between the teeth," and the "obscene thing" is covered with a "black blob of flies" that "tickled under his nostrils". The detailed description of a dark and sinister creature makes the reader aware of the great evil of the Lord of the Flies. When Simon talks to the seemingly lifeless, devil-like object, the source of that wickedness is revealed. Even though the conversation may be a complete illusion, Simon learns that the beast, which has been feared by the other boys is not a physical threat, instead a mental and emotional threat.…

William Golding utilizes a number of different adaptable symbols within the story to show how the schoolboys are transformed by their new life on the otherwise unpopulated island. Fire, for instance, represents hope and safety during the early stages of the novel. This is proven through dialogue in which Ralph, the newly elected leader of the group, addresses the assembly of children before him and proclaims that, “We can help them find us… we must make smoke on the top of the mountain. We must make a fire” (Golding 38). Ralph’s statement that by making a fire, they “can help them find us” shows that the primary purpose of the fire is to help them be rescued and returned to safety, consequently indicating that the fire symbolizes safety.…

Lord of the Flies is truly a diverse novel full of dark themes and moral messages, as well as deep symbolisms. The conch symbolizes society and chivalry for the boys; when it breaks, they lose all government that they had, and descend into savagery. Piggy’s spectacles are a symbol of technology; the boys use them to start fires on the island. Finally, fire is a symbol of hope; the boys grow hopeful at the prospect of building a signal fire and being seen and rescued, however, when the signal fire goes out and a boat passes, they lose that hope.
