There are three different branches of the United States government; legislative, executive, and judicial. They all have a way of “checking” each other, and making sure one doesn’t become more powerful than the other. All three have different roles in government, and these roles help run the US Government.
The legislative branch of government has the power to make the laws. They also check the executive and judicial branch. They check the executive branch in many different ways. “The standing committees are permanent bodies with specific responsibilities spelled out in the Senates official rules.” The select committees are made up for certain reasons. They could be used for investigating presidential campaigns, like the Watergate Scandal in 1973. Today the joint committees are used for “studies” or “housekeeping functions” like the “Joint Economic Committee” or the “Joint Committee of taxation.” The legislative process from a bill presentation to presidential action has many steps. First step is the presentation of the bill. Whoever presents the bill the becomes the bills “sponsor”, also other people who agree with the bill can be “co-sponsors”. Step two is “committee consideration.” “All bills and resolutions are "referred" to one or more House or Senate committees according their specific rules.” Step three is “committee action”, if the committee accepts the bill it keeps going, if it is denied it stops in this step of the process. Step four is “sub-committee review.” The committee send the bill to a sub-committee for extra review. Step five is “mark up.” The sub-committee will make changes to the bill and send it back to the main committee to be approved. One is the Department of Agriculture, they look over the production and selling of crops, they also will help with selling with other countries, and regulating prizes. The Department of Commerce deals with trading with other countries, they also will watch for trading practices that aren’t done the right way. Department of Defense watches anything to do with our armed forces. They also look over oil and if a flood happens they are in charge of it. The Department of Education is the head of all education programs in the U.S. The Department of Energy they were created to regulate and look over all energy conservation and nuclear energy use in the country.
