What Are The Ten Laws Of Boundaries

Superior Essays
The fifth chapter of the book boundaries is about the ten laws of boundaries and how we should be applying them to our lives. Some of the laws covered in this chapter were the law of respect, the law of evaluation, and the law of activity. The law of respect perfectly is perfectly summarized when the author says, “We need to love the boundaries of others in order to command respect our own.” (Cloud, Townsend, 1992, p.92). While the law of respect is very important, we are reminded by the law of evaluation that we should be able to respect someone and their boundaries without being afraid to evaluate or confront them on the boundary problems we see. The next law that stood out to me was the law of activity, the law of activity talks about

I admit that throughout my life I have often failed to implement positive boundary laws and principles as outlined by Dr. Cloud and Dr. Townsend. The most distinct violation and subsequent consequences can be observed by my violation of Law #4: the Law of Power. This boundary law states, firstly, that you have the power to do some things that will bring the fruits of victory within your own boundaries, and yet conversely that you do not have the power to change others outside of your boundaries. I violated the latter by taking on the responsible to change the behaviors of my friend. I felt personally and morally responsible to make this person aware of their sin and to bring them to a state of repentance.…

Cloud and Townsend state, “You need to evaluate the effects of setting boundaries and be responsible to the other person, but that does not mean you should avoid setting boundaries.” When setting boundaries, it is likely that some loved ones will be hurt by our decision to set certain boundaries. How does the way we use borders affect our lives in the world today and the lives of those around us? Living in a world that has so many borders, physical, social, political, and mental forces us to choose between building borders up—causing conflict—or, tearing them down—bringing peace—to one another. How do we understand them so we can better navigate the roles they play in our lives? Looking at borders inside and out we are, in a way, a sort of gatekeeper for all of the borders we experience. Acknowledging our role as gatekeepers brings into focus the choices we, as humans, need to make about what is important versus what is not concerning the various borders in our lives.…
