What Are The Sisters In Julia Alvarez's In The Times Of The Butterflies

In the Times of the Butterflies is a novel written by Julia Alvarez. The novel followed the four Mirabal sisters contrasting roles as females that sets their decisions on whether−or not−they wanted to follow the anti-Trujillo movement throughout this movie. The sisters are, Dede, Minerva, Maria Teresa, and Patrai. Dede and Minerva are the most conflicted on the whole movement, while Maria Teresa and Patria’s was less conflicted and their participation in the Trujillo movement was more of an outgrowth of their relationships. The role of the women in the Dominican Republic society extremely traditional and it follows everyone one of the Trujillo oppressive movement. In the Mirabal family, the mothers were the ones that stayed home and the daughter’s future on whether it attend school− or not−were been discussed with reference to marriage and motherhood. The daughters were not allowed to go to school, they were expected to stay home and take care of the house with the mother. Though it was her decision in the making, she later regrets her decision. She tried to make her father happy by obeying the traditional sex roles and avoiding the whole athletic, politics, and business expects of life. This led her to have a traditional marriage to Jaimito that compromises all of her beliefs. The fact that it wasn’t what she really wanted was the gesture that helped put a trouble in her marriage.
