Coming from a poor family, Gatsby knew what it was like to be a low class member of society and had always aimed towards better things for himself. Even when he was a young boy, his strong will for bettering his life had always been evident. Gatsby kept a schedule of “resolves” or things he knew he needed to do in order to keep his life on track and focused on becoming a success in all that he could. His schedule said, “Rise from bed….6.00 A.M. Dumbbell exercise and wall-scaling…….6.15-6.30 Study electricity, etc…...7.15-8.15 Work…….8.30-4.30 P.M. Baseball and sports……4.30-5.00 Practice elocution, poise and how to attain it…5.00-6.00 Study needed inventions...7.00-9.00” (Great 173). They both spent many years dreaming of the high life and knew how to chase it well. Both men fell hard for careless woman and experienced the costs that came with it. In general, Dexter and Gatsby were both just blinded by hope, and this hope kept them back from ever thinking logically and seeing how painful their realities were, even if they tried to cover them up with fancy clothes and dollar bills. The problems were there, the women were never faithful, and the parties were always over the top, Gatsby and Dexter were similar because they both spent years trying for a woman that would never love them back fully and they were both so persistent in achieving their goals, but they are very different men through the methods they when trying to create these blue lawn and winter
