Fred and EB kicked off their relationship with a “meet cute” when EB pretended to get run over by Fred, who then proceeded to try and put the bunny out of his misery with a rock only stopping when EB talks. This moment and the rest of the movie plays similarly to the 2007 film The Bee Movie, where a human learns an animal can talk then spends the movie helping that animal towards their goal (becoming a drummer in Hop, and suing the human race in The Bee Movie). In both movies the animals get their dream before realizing they need to go back and help their human friends, and confirmed love interest in the case of The Bee Movie. Along with this, in Hop when EB has his realization of helping Fred, he asks David Hasselhoff for advice, at the end of which Hasselhoff says, “Go to him,” which is a line said in the climax of many romance movies. This spurs EB on to save Fred, and after the final conflict says he wants to share being Easter Bunny with him.
