What Are The Similarities Between Gilgamesh And Noah's Flood

Saving Private Ryan, Casablanca, and Inglourious Basterds are three different movies that were produced in different time periods and have different plots, details, and points of view, but all still revolve around one common historical event-World War II. This is an occurrence that happens not only in movies but also in literature. A literary example of this is the correlation between the flood story in The Epic of Giglamesh and the flood story in the Old Testament Bible. Giglamesh is an epic poem written by an ancient Mesopotamian culture around the year 2000 B.C. In Giglamesh, the god Utnapishtim recounts the story of a flood, in which he is saved from a global flood by building a large boat (Taylor). The Biblical story of the flood is contained in Genesis, the first chapter of the Catholic Bible Old Testament. It tells the story of Noah, who was saved from a global flood by building an ark ("Learn the Lessons in the Story of Noah's Ark and the Flood."). Gilgamesh was written well before the Biblical flood story, but they have many similarities ("Gilgamesh, Atrahasis, and the Flood."). The flood story is not limited to these two accounts; there are many accounts from multiple Middle Eastern cultures of a flood. Stories of floods can also be found in South American and Pacific Island cultures (Morris). An article on nationalgeographic.com states that “Almost every culture on earth includes an ancient flood story,” (“National Geographic”). Some of these stories can be found in Irish legends and in literature from the ancient Greeks and Romans (“National Geographic”).
