Aengus wanted to find true love, while Galarza and Johnson were determined to survive desperate circumstances; however, all three shared an ability to endure hardship to accomplish their goals. Galarza had trouble pronouncing words although Miss Ryan did help him,“..her voice patiently maneuvering me over the awful idiocies of the English language.” Miss Ryan helped Galarza who was having trouble pronouncing some words. The teachers never let them forget who they are,“Miss Hopley and her teachers never let us forget why we were at Lincoln: for those who were alien, to become good Americans; for those who were so born, to accept the rest of us.” The teachers at Lincoln never let the students that were new to America forget who they are. Galarza had some difficulties through learning a new language and becoming an American, but even after he learned English and became a good American the teachers at Lincoln didn’t let them forget who they are and where they come
