The movie Awakenings is about a doctor named Oliver Sacks and a patient named Leonard. Leonard who survived the encephalitis epidemic now has a brain Syndrome which allows him to be in a catatonic state. After Dr. Sacks many hours of research he came across the totally new drug at the time L- Dopa. L- Dopa would allow the patients using it to come out of the catatonic state they were in, so that the could do everyday tasks. Eventually, the results of the drug were not as effective and the patients ended up going back to the catatonic state they were in.
The movie Flowers for Algernon is about a man named Charlie Gordon who wanted to get smarter so that he could fit in. Charlie who had a disability with learning went to a night school for adults. At the night school Charlie had a teacher named Ms. Kinnian, since she felt and knew Charlie wanted to get smarter she referred him to the doctors named Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur. The two doctors have been working on an operation that would allow a person to gain intelligence. In order for charlie to have the operation on him he has to go through a variety of tests to have the operation. For instance in Awakenings they used a drug instead of an operation as it does in Flowers for Algernon. They also differ from each other because they one is from a brain disorder and the other is where the patient wants to get smarter. Another big difference is that Flowers for Algernon is fictional and Awakenings is a true story. Flowers for Algernon differs from Awakenings because the patient in Flowers for Algernon doesn’t understand the people around him, whereas the patient in Awakenings understands the people but he cannot interact with people or do everyday
