This sculpture is referenced to a sculpture named Apollo and Daphne, created by an Italian artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini. The event that influenced MacDowell to create this sculpture, was based on her travels around Europe, more specifically Italy. The meaning and purpose behind this artwork, Daphne and many more is environmental issues. Her travels through Renaissance, Italy influenced the sculpture, Daphne, immensely. ‘Last of His Tribe’ compared to ‘Daphne’ shows similarities but also differences in the way she has used colour but also techniques. The similarities between the two, is that they both show relation to nature and that the nature is combined with human aspects. In the sculpture ‘Daphne’, she is represented and entwined with a tree. ‘last of his tribe’ also has human aspects, some of the frog’s legs are human legs, the morphing of both human and frog. They are more similar in context and influence then they are in techniques and colour. She has used porcelain in majority of her works, including ‘Daphne’ and kept the colour scheme to white, but in this sculpture (last of His tribe) she has drifted away from using white by making the center frog a bright orange and the surrounding frogs a dark grey almost black colour. She has also changed the material that is used to create sculptures, in the first sculpture she used porcelain, but in this second sculpture she has used “slip-cast and hand-built china, stain, cone 10 glaze and oil paint” (katemacdowell, 2017). This sculpture was made from the influence by when she worked at producing website in the high-tech corporation environment. She was exposed to how humans and various other things affect the environment, including the species that live in these environments. One of the influences was not only from this job but environmental issues themselves. The meaning and purpose behind this sculpture is environmental issues, more specifically loss of species and deforestation. This shows that human beings are destroying the environment, taking everything special and unique out of it, like this orange frog, and making it and endangered species, the last of its tribe because of what has been done to their habitat.
