First, in the story “Confetti Girl” the father and the narrator see their actions very differently from each other. The narrator thinks the father is neglecting her by choosing books and reading over her. The author writes, “He leaves the table to scan the bookshelves, and all of a sudden, I care about the tough beef, the mushy potatoes, and the cold beans. Why should I eat when my own father has abandoned his food? Nothing's more important than his books and vocabulary words. The narrator in the story is feeling disregarded since her mother chooses her education over her. The story states, “‘Opportunity? For me? Or for you?’ I stormed off to my room and threw myself onto my bed. I ached inside. Like the feeling you get watching a lost balloon float far into the sky until it becomes invisible nothing.” (paragraph 34 and 35) The narrator feels as if her mother is being selfish, choosing education and not thinking about her. The mother is only thinking about herself and ignoring the new issues the narrator has acquired from the news. The narrator now has to leave to a new state rather than settle in their new home and try to become close with the mother. On the other hand, the mother choices could be viewed differently because she is trying to create a better life for not only herself but the narrator. The mother had chosen to go back to college for the better but may be wrongly accused of being selfish. The author wrote, “‘I’ll be home at the end of July. And after this I can finally graduate. Our lives will change then.’ She reached over and stroked my hair. ‘For the better.’” (paragraph 15) The mother is trying to help her family to build a better future than what they have, but she needs to finish her education first.
