What Are The Similarities Between A Dead Poet's Society And A Separate Peace?

Deepak Chopra, a well-known author, once stated, “When you make a choice, you change the future.” (Refspace par. 1). This quote made by Chopra could effectively be used in both protagonists of Dead Poet’s Society and A Separate Peace. Both Neil and Phineas shared similar characteristics including the inability to pursue what they truly wanted to do in life. Both stories may connect through similar settings, character traits, and schools. Although these two characters share various similar traits, they also own a couple of opposing qualities. In the movie, Dead Poet’s Society, and the novel, A Separate Peace, both protagonists are faced with the pressures from school, yet have an outlet to seek when they required assistance in certain things. The novel and movie have different societies in which both Neil and Phineas could resort to when feeling overwhelmed. To create an outlet from education, Phineas founded the Super Suicide Society. This society required people who wanted to join to do a daring jump out of the tree and into the river aside it. In A Dead Poet’s Society, the majority of the kids’ parents forced them down certain paths and drove them to achieve better grades constantly. The Super Suicide Society helped the kids conquer their fear over jumping from the tree into the river. Whereas in the Dead Poet’s Society, the kids were able to practice poetry while conquering their fears of possibly disappointing their parents. Along with the outlet given to both protagonists was the ability to think for themselves. The limitation given to them kept the kids from pursuing their desires and what they truly sought. All in all, both societies helped conquer their fears while teaching them important lessons and gave them a place to fall when school was
