What Are The Reasons For Julius Caesar's Downfall

The famous words of Julius Caesar “Et tu, Brute? Then fall Caesar!” during his assassination from William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar created a dramatic ending for the Roman Republic (Julius Caesar 3.1.87). Julius Caesar marked the end of the Roman republic and his nephew Octavius marked the beginning of the Roman Empire. Is Julius Caesar the reason for the downfall of the Roman Republic? If not, what were the real reasons for its downfall? The decline of the Roman Republic began many years before Caesar because of division among the people of Rome, disregard for laws, and deception among political leaders. As Abraham Lincoln once said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand”. These words are very applicable to the Roman Republic because one of the reasons it fell apart was because it was divided. The First Servile War in 135 BC was the first of many instances of division among the people of Rome. The division among the people led to many tensions. The two classes were divided and one class would always be unhappy. Without the unity among the classes for the same views and goals and wants, the people would always be divided and Rome would constantly be fighting herself. Because of the disregard for the law, the whole system was failing. When one law was broken, nothing could keep others from being violated too. The laws became powerless and the whole Republic system became unbalanced. With the whole system falling apart and the division among the people, the downfall of Rome was inevitable.
