The marriage between genders of the same sex has been under hot debate frequently during the last few years and it wasn’t until recently that the U.S Supreme Court Ruled that States do not have the right to ban same-sex marriage. Although the voting between the justices were close, 4 votes against and 5 in favor, I believe that they have made the appropriate decision. The law should provide a sense of equal dignity to all people following it. People shouldn’t have to spend their life unmarried, they should be able to marry and have this type of relationship with whoever they choose because the Constitution gives the same equal rights as a heterosexual marriage. People should not be denied the right to marry under these circumstances because it would be unfair and degrade their social status. Gay marriage bans are taking away the rights of what people should be entitled to. These bans result in injury, discrimination, deprivation of same-sex couples and their families of equal dignity. It also labels and treats them as a socially inferior class and deems them as, “Unworthy of participation in one of the fundamental institutions of our society” (Head). Throughout history, our country has fought discrimination and by allowing gay marriage our country has taken yet another step of eliminating discrimination whether it 's for racial minorities, people with disabilities, or of their sexual orientation. If a married couple were to divorce they would be able to protect themselves financially and possibly settle disputes of child custody. The US armed forces provide certain benefits such as health insurance that would otherwise be inaccessible to other relationships or partnerships. Married couples are also granted tax, retirement and health insurance benefits by the IRS and US department of labor. However, the US federal government does not grant equivalent benefits to gay couples in civil unions or domestic partnerships to those in a marriage. In 2009, there was an analysis by the New York Times estimated that same-sex couples denied marriage benefits would acquire an additional $41,196 to $467,562 in expenses over their lifespan compared to married heterosexual couples(Head).
