Standardized tests are an unreliable measure of a student’s performance. They fail to measure importance skills such as creativity and critical contemplating. Studies indicate that standardized tests reward superficial thinking and demoralize more systematic thinking. With this in mind a very incomplete picture of a student’s achievement and other abilities goes into effect. The results are just to justify high-stakes decisions on school closings, teacher evaluation, and student promotion. The misuse and overuse of standardized tests are undermining educational quality, quantity and equity. Which is having teachers use a “teaching to the test” method. This only helps students get ready for the tests instead of being taught the needed curriculum for life and college. This will decrease a student’s true potential in having a well built prepared mind for college.
