Treatment: Pros and Cons The method of treatment for ADHD varies from patient to patient based on their needs. Luckily, there are a multitude of treatments available. Possible treatments include, but are not limited to, medication, behavioral therapy, education or training, or a combination of treatments. For the sake of this paper, only the two most common treatments of ADHD will be discussed. Medication, occasionally referred to as pharmacological interventions, is a very common treatment for people diagnosed with ADHD. The medication most commonly and effectively used to treat this disorder is called a stimulant; between 70-80% of children with ADHD respond positively to this type of medication (Attention-Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD, 2016). Research has shown that behavioral therapy is an important part of treatment for children with the disorder because it can help to reduce problems with disruptive behavior, attentiveness in class, impulsivity, and hyperactivity (ADHD, 2016). For children age 4-5 with ADHD, behavior therapy is recommended as the first line of treatment. Good treatment plans will include close monitoring, follow-ups and any changes needed along the way. At home, parents can help their child with ADHD by creating a routine, getting organized, avoiding distractions, limiting choices, using goals and rewards and disciplining effectively (ADHD, 2016).
