Essay On High School Sports

High school sports in the United States are overshadowing academics and that we are focusing all our attention and funds on sports rather than education. I agree with this claim in that I believe high school sports have become dominant in comparison to academics in the US the past few years and that this is a problem. I believe that what’s most important is academics and that we should be focusing more of our time, energy, and money into our education rather than our sports teams. I think to accomplish more of a focus on academics without completely eliminating high school sports would be to make compromises. High schools should create a grade average a student must meet to be eligible to play on a sport team, that way the student gets to keep playing the sport they love and their grades will go up as well. I think the school could even go so far as to require the rest of the student body to meet a certain grade average if they want to attend fun events. This way it’s a motivation for students to succeed both academically and athletically. Another idea I have for supporting education more would be cutting back financially on supporting sports teams and giving half the money that goes into the sports teams back to academics and then the sports teams can raise money by doing activities such as bake sales, car washes, and fundraisers. I know at my high school teams liked to buy matching t-shirts or sweatshirts saying their name and number on it and I’m sure that cost some money and while it is a nice concept the money they raise could be going towards buying equipment instead of the school supplying them the money to buy equipment as
