Furthermore, data obtained by the Australian Bureau of Statistics provided useful statistics in reference to cases of domestic violence occurring within Australian society (Mulroney, 2003). Key results produced significant facts including that 23% of women who had been married or in a relationship experienced violence at some point; 42% of women who had been in a previous relationship reported violence by a previous partner; half of the women experiencing violence in their current relationship had experienced at least another previous incident of violence, injuries typically including bruises, cuts, scratches, stab or gunshot wounds; 12% of women who had reported experiencing violence by their current partner stated that they were currently living in fear; women who experienced physical or sexual violence by a partner were more likely to experience emotional abuse (manipulation, isolation or intimidation) than those who had not experienced violence; and 35% of women experienced violence from a partner while going through periods of separation.
