What are the most prominent values in my home? What core values, related to nursing as a career, do I have? The most prominent values in my home are integrity, communication, and ambition. These core values shape me into the person I am today, and are related to the nursing career. For example, as a nurse one must have integrity. A nurse needs to be able admit when they make a mistake because the patient’s life is in their hands. The patient is the top priority; not the health care professional’s ego. A nurse must have good communication skills because they act as a middle man between the doctors and patients. The nurse helps educate patients about their current condition(s) and treatment(s). What influences in my life caused me to choose, prize, and affirm these values? The main influences in my life that have caused me to choose, prize, and affirm these values are my parents. Throughout my childhood, my parents used the saying, “honesty is the best quality.” This saying is extremely true for the field of nursing. My parents also taught me to have good communication with others. Honesty and communication are extremely important qualities that go hand and hand as a nurse. My parents have always encouraged me that hard work and determination pay off. One of my favorite quotes that my dad taught me, is “you can pay now, or you can pay later, either way you’re still going to pay.” I lived by this saying, and it has helped me make advance level soccer teams, get into nursing school, and maintain a high GPA. Therefore, my parents are the biggest influences that caused me to choose, prize and affirm these values.
