What Are The Media's Expectations Of Gender

Society and the media’s expectations and gender roles have been affecting males and females for decades, mainly in a negative manner. These expectations and gender roles are in no way restricted to the USA. These concepts are a global issue, and as time goes on, they happen to be getting more of a problem. Dehumanisation, sexualisation, and objectification are three other concepts that have been plaguing society and the media for ages as well, along with standards set by society which are practically impossible to reach. Rights have been and are being taken away from certain people just because they’re a certain gender, and some people aren’t even seen as humans, but mere objects. Gender roles are a social construct used to show how a certain gender should behave, and what is socially acceptable for a certain gender and what isn’t. Such as the common stereotypes that girls should be gentle, beautiful and quiet while boys should be rash and powerful. In the video, the females are looked at by the men as if they are not human beings, but objects. Rather than treating them as human beings, the women are portrayed as objects just there for sex, and men’s pleasure. This claim is proved by how the girls in the video are dancing rather provocatively on and for the males, while the males watch and sing about the “blurred lines” between yes and no when it comes to sexual consent. The song goes as far as saying “You’re an animal”, comparing them to animals and dehumanising them further.
