There were many major events in the Decade of the 1980s. One of them was the creation of Pacman. Pacman is an arcade game that was developed by Namco and created by video game designer, Toru Iwatani. The game released in Japan on May 22, 1980. The game was developed over the course of about a year, beginning in April 1979. Iwatani wanted to appeal a wider audience such as women instead of just men since very few games were played by women at all. Because of this, he added elements such as a maze and miniature ghosts as characters. The result of all these elements was a game he had called Puck Man because the main character has a hockey puck type of shape. Pacman’s character was the first gaming mascot, and it had also established the maze game genre which led to many games to come in the near future. Pacman also opened gaming for females by releasing Ms. Pacman in 1981 which included multiple mazes, moving fruit and faster gameplay.
