What Are The Long-Term Effects Of Cyberbullying

According to Ambassadors 4 Kids Club, 77% of students in schools are bullied mentally, verbally, & physically ("Bullying Statistics"). Sadly, bullying has become a major issue in schools today because of technology, and almost three fourths of kids use the internet on their phones (Hinduja and Patchin). Cyberbullying creates many long term effects that many people are not aware of. There are many effects from being the victim of cyberbullying, or being the bully, and being a bystander in the situation. To begin with, students getting cyberbullied in schools creates many long term problems. Multiple kids go through a lot of pain during and after the time that they are getting picked on. Psychologist Guy Winch talks about the seriousness of cyberbullying saying that "The intensity of the emotional pain bullying elicits, and the fact that other people underestimate how much hurt they feel makes being bullied an incredibly traumatic experience that can leave significant emotional scars." Most people don’t know that even the bystander can get affected. However, research shows that kids who witness bullying may still have the same psychologically risks as the victims and the bullies (Gordon). After watching someone getting bullied, the bystanders feel guilty, so they might have an increase with the use of drugs and alcohol (Aspa). Also, being a bystander in the situation can still cause health effects, including depression and anxiety (Aspa). Many bystanders have bad anxiety after seeing someone getting bullied. They might even be scared that there isn’t enough security at the school or have social anxiety in social environments.The bystanders may even miss or skip school from watching someone get bullied (Gordon).
