In fact, many said that the Holy Roman Empire was neither an empire nor Roman. The other half of the traditional Roman Empire (the Eastern portion) became Byzantium. In contrast to their Western neighbors, Byzantium managed to preserve many products, ideas, and texts from the traditional Roman Empire.
