What Are The Literary Devices Used In Poetry

Improved Essays
The theme of my poem is Conflict with self. The essential question that I used was: What are the events in life that move individuals from innocence to experience. What influenced my theme was the fact that I am short and people tend to doubt your capabilities without knowing them; kind of like judging a book by its cover. I choose my poem to rhyme because I wanted it flow and be like a rap. The structure is traditional because it rhymes, and it is like a sonnet in that the rhyme schemes are the same but mine is two lines longer than a sonnet. My five literary devices are an onomatopoeia, assonance, rhymes, similes and some imagery. An onomatopoeia is a word that sounds like a sound, and I used the word squall which mean a shriek or a cry and the word squall sounds like a squawk or a cry, so it is an …show more content…
The fourth poetic device that I used were similes and a simile is comparing to objects using like or as. The similes that i used were veins coursing like a river and thoughts like war. The fifth and final poetic device that I used was imagery. imagery is visually descriptive or figurative language. The imagery that I used was the line Still holding a smoking gun and it puts a picture in your mind of what is happening. These poetic devices support my theme because the onomatopoeia shows how the boy cries out when he is being bullied, and this shows how he is losing his gentle view of the world when he moves from unhurt innocence to having experienced the reality of how harsh life can be. Assonance's support my theme because the words enough and tough are both emphasized assonance's that show how he was doubted. The rhymes allow you to see that he was treated badly again and again because they are repeated and since they rhyme they stick out and allow you to notice them and they show you have he was no longer innocent after what he had

In this poem I use the strategy Internal Rhyme, each verse has 8 syllables and the whole poem has 8 lines. This poem symbolises about how some people just wander aimlessly through life not knowing what will happen next; will they be a saint, or will the lead a life of crime? I've used this formatting to show how formal some people may appear to be, which is the left side of the poem, which uses only one font. The right side represents the crumbling happiness of said person. These fonts were chosen to show the many moods they can go through, with a mind of a day to day basis.…

Another example of figurative language, is in Migration when the author says, “As the only window to the future.” This is an example of onomatopoeia, because this quote refers to someone jumping through a window, but since there really isn’t a window to see the future this has to be an example onomatopoeia. A third example of a literary device is point of view. In Red Umbrella the point of view…
