Nadia Abramson, from the University School of NSU, says that the arts have “infested the hallways and taken thousands of students hostage… and [created] wannabe starving artists” (Abramson). It is key for children to go to school to find derivatives and learn core subjects, Abramson says, and removing the arts will force these overly-creative individuals that wish to express themselves through art to only focus on academia. In providing creative outlets, supposedly students that are driven by arts related subjects will not learn important facts like Newton’s Laws of Physics and where the Electoral College originated; these “students get too passionate about their art classes and completely neglect their core classes”, and, as a result, these “poor, unappreciated artists still cannot understand Shakespeare’s poetry”, since they “paint abstract nothingness [and] sing bad choral music” (Abramson). While Abramson believes in the abolition of arts programs entirely, others believe that the funding that is going to arts programs should be going into sports programs. It is seen that in most schools, “sports are the favored activities among students”, seen through the turnout of students at sports events and the ratio of sports students to arts students (Johnson). While academia certainly is foremost in school programs, it is necessary that school systems provide their students with the ability to partake in whatever activity they wish to help them grow not only as individuals, but as members of society. Art has the possibility to “pave the way for a child’s academic and future success as a professional”, and making room for such an expressive field in a child’s life will sustain them for their entire lives (Metla).
