Why Do People Use Social Media?

Social media can be defined as something that people share information over, however some people may define social media as something that starts to take over someone’s daily routine. Social media, in means of communication is not something that is relatively new, however some of applications and websites we use are. Social media has changed the daily lives of Americans by setting standards, taking up time, creating distractions, and emotionally changing people.

One of the earliest forms of communication that people considered “Social Media” was the telegraph, in which it sent early versions of e-mail, otherwise known as T-mail. This was the earliest form, which was common during the Civil War, and also before the invention of the internet.

There are hundreds of websites that allow online chatting, posting pictures, videos, as well as updating statuses. Throughout time, people have been using social media to communicate with other people, trying to maintain a connection with them, when they are unable to talk in person. Often times people use social media to talk to people who live in completely different countries. Allowing people to communicate through social media has allowed people to make friends over social media, and to reconnect with friends that may have been lost over the years. There are many sites on the web, that allow people to communicate with pictures and videos, such as snapchat, youtube. There are also other sites that allow people to post pictures, as well as short and sometimes long captions and posts, in which they allow people to catch up with what you are doing. Facebook and twitter allow people to post short status updates and “tweets”, which can be viewed by the public. Another website that allows people to communicate are blog sites. These websites allow people to view what you post, whether it is pictures, videos, or words describing you. All of these posts that people make can not only be viewed by the public, but people can also comment on what they think about the …show more content…
There have been many cases, not just proven by online research, but in my personal life as well. More times than not, parents are not able to stop their kids from crying, so instead they give them their phone so that they are distracted in the moment. Kids in today’s society know how to navigate and iphone, go on social media, and post things within the application or website. Mostly applying to the kids who are able to read, or look up a video, the language that kids use today is so much more different than the language that adults and other children use. The language that is being spread around the world, as well as across the United States of America.
