The first stage of grief Steven went through was denial. Denial is the act of declaring something untrue and refusing to believe that it is true. An example is, “ I bet Jeffy’s down there in Philly, guzzling cheesesteaks, having a great time, getting waited on hand and foot by Mom, while I’m up here eating all the Hungry Man dinners on the East Coast,…”(Sonnenblick 52). Anger is a strong feeling of annoyance, displeasure, or hostility. Steven got really mad at his parents, Annette, teachers/school. Basically at everyone. For example, Steven gets mad at everyone at school because when the word spills about Jeffrey having cancer, everyone was saying they feel bad for Jeffrey and how “lucky” Jeffrey was to have Steven as his older brother (Sonnenblick 132). This shows that Steven was clearly angry at the people at school saying how lucky Jeffrey was when he had needles stabbed in him. He was also mad because he kept his feelings to himself and kept thinking how unlucky Jeffrey was and that got Steven mader and mader. Another example of anger from Steven is when he got really mad at his dad because his dad told him that he will not be able to go to his All City Jazz Band Concert (Sonnenblick 237). Steven had been working so hard and trying his very best in practices and was really hoping his parents would be able to make his concert. But his parents weren’t able to make it and Steven was really angry because that his dad couldn’t come and see him play and show off his good drumming
