Some sources prefer matches over lighter, some prefer lighter. I personally prefer lighter, because the matches can be finished easily, can easily get wet and might not work, some people can’t use matches and just break it in half. Also, some lighters have a light in the back, which is also essential for survival. The source of heat (fire) can be used; making a light in darkness, cooking food, keeping warm, making emergency signal through smoke, keeping animals away, etc. Some sources have mentioned that, if you don’t have a source find something (sticks, rocks etc.) to make a fire. But, it is extremely hard for people who have never done it before, especially in emergency
