A police officer refused to arrest a homeless person for sleeping in a private garage. Despite a local ordinance that clearly forbids such behavior, the officer felt it would be unethical to make an arrest in that situation unless the homeless person was disturbing the peace. The officer’s supervisors were unsympathetic to his ethical stance, and he was suspended from duty without pay (Gaines, and Miller 17). It is often said that ethics are rules or standards that govern people when a situation arises. Ethics is defined as the moral principles that governs a person’s perception of right and wrong.
