What Are The Effects Of The Great Depression

The Great Depression was so large and devastating that its title is its description. A depression, when talking about economics or history, means a time when unemployment is up, businesses go bankrupt and people cannot afford the basic necessities of life like food, clothing and shelter. The Great Depression affected the world but started in the United States. Americans were overbuying on a new idea of credit and installment paying. Stock prices started to fall in September 1929. October , 1929 the stock market crashed. This was later called Black Tuesday. But what really started The Great Depression was the rise of unemployment and product surplus with no one to purchase it. People lost their homes, businesses closed, jobs were gone everyone was hurting. Farming communities felt it less than their city neighbors. Self-sufficient communities continued to sell and trade to meet their needs. Although, farmers that had been borrowing money from the banks to make ends meet because of the drought, also lost their farms. Then there was the dust bowl adding problems. Wives managed the food, the home, the clothing, medical care, and raising the children. The Great Depression made their lives harder too. These women had to become smarter about their budgets. They had to make the food stretch further and relied on cheaper foods like soups, noodles and beans. Cheaper cuts of meat were purchased even horse meat to make sure the family was fed. Gardens were expanded and taken care of as well as they would take care of their children. Nothing went to waste.
