Online dating is currently a rising trend in society. Many individuals are choosing to build relationships through the internet, rather than investing in personal interactions. Many people try dating over the internet because of the convenience it gives them and their curiosity. While there are some benefits to online dating, there are also some risks in which one should be aware. Dan Slater’s claim that dating online is better than dating in person in his article “A Million First Dates” is flawed because of the ineffective matching process, safety concerns, and lack of development of social skills.

Although these questions may help online daters get to know each other, the answers they provide could be false or too vague to determine a solid match. There are no real interactions online, getting to know a potential mate in person is preferred by most and has proven to be more effective because both parties can physically see how well the couple seeking to go on a date will be compatible. In the article “What Are the Real and Perceived Risks and Dangers of Online Dating?” by Couch, Pranee, and Pitts (2012) they mentioned many instances where “one profile was his true profile and the other was ‘the 32-yr old is the unreal me.’” The author claims he was using the real profile to look for a girl his age to be his girlfriend, while using the other profile in the hope of attracting older women for sex” (705). According to this quote, people who only want to keep dating online may be likely to be looking specifically for short term relationships, whereas it tends to seem they want to have a long term relationship for years to come. Also in an example given from Couch et al, “Phil, a 45-year-old man expressed his concerns: ‘One can only tell in person really if one is lying or not. Eyes are windows to the Soul as you know. Via chatting one can get hints someone might be lying, but it is a bit hard to tell’ ” (702).
