A fleeting rush of adrenaline is worth cold sweats in the middle of the night. We inhale them and feel relief, so we kill and maim for them. Despite all the awful things drugs make us do, people keep coming back for more. Addicts rob gas stations, gang bangers push coke across the border and force children to deal. Anti-drug messages are pushed through the education system while parents beg their children to just say no. Drugs are bad. Prominent in human history they are; entire countries have become addicted, namely China during the Opium War. Their dangers are not unknown, yet we allow them to destroy pieces of our society. This age group tends to experiment with illicit material, drug related or not; young adults aged 18-25 make up most of America’s using population (Treating Addiction). If youth are over-represented in drug related crime, the following generation will suffer from a lack of structural sustainment. Drug related arrests are likely: “State and local law enforcement arrested 1,328,457 suspects for drug offenses,” mostly comprised of possession charges (Sacco). Drug involvement also affects youth with gang involvement as a gateway. There are programs to prevent youth involvement, but they have their setbacks. The FBI’s Safe Streets program designed to combat youth street gang involvement, for instance, was suspended in Baltimore after police found guns and drugs in its office and arrested two employees (Fighting Gangs). Although implemented in the 1990s, gang membership has increased since the mid-2000s (Fighting Gangs). Efforts have been made, but federal anti-gang programs are ineffective and the public lacks resources to contain problem, allowing community detriment to
