As an American it 's something that you grow up with portraying communism as a negative form of government. Thanks to the Cold War it 's seen as an enemy form of government that oppresses it 's people abridging their freedoms as humans. What we tend to oversee however is that there 's no such thing as an only negative form of government. In fact, for millions of people communism was, not a good thing, but rather an okay thing. It allowed the people, of Eastern Europe in specific, to not prosper but rather to get by. The US State Department has a three-tier system of ranking countries on their human trafficking issues with the third tier being the worst. Ukraine ranks as a tier two country and the only reason it ranks this high is thanks to having some form of written action against trafficking. This being said there is a big difference between having written plans against something and actually doing anything. “Ukraine is a country of origin, transit and destination for trafficking in men, women and children. Internal trafficking is also a growing problem. According to a research commissioned by IOM, over 160,000 Ukrainians became victims to human trafficking since 1991, which makes Ukraine one of the largest source country for trafficking in human beings in Europe.” (http://www.iom.org.ua/en/combating-human-trafficking). A big roadblock stopping the Ukrainian government from further working on the issue and diverting funds towards it 's victims has been it 's recent conflict with Russia. It’s hard for a country locked in a military conflict to focus on the trafficking of people as rough as that is to hear someone being exploited just isn 't as important as the invasion of your country. After coming from a world where everyone is equal no matter what they do these soviet states were thrust into the cutthroat capitalist world where socialism doesn 't work. Now, if you 're suddenly free from oppression with an open world of capitalism and unlimited economic potential it is easy to go a little nuts. Now when you can literally buy a human for less than three hundred dollars and bring in thousands of dollars a month for years upon years without having to pay that individual the profit margin is just plain ridiculus. It’s a lot like those good kids who go to college and lose their minds. Their parents were strict with them and high school and now suddenly they have absolute freedom and are surrounded by as many friends as they want and an unlimited amount of alcohol and have no self control. It’s the same concept just extrapolated to the size of Eastern
