Do you value your freedom? As an American citizen, do you completely understand the cost of the lifestyle you live? The freedom of speech, religion, gun ownership, and the fact that these freedoms are protected by the most powerful document in America, the Constitution, came at a grave cost. This cost was, and is paid, by the countless men and women who put themselves in harms way everyday, American military members. In this brief essay I would like to discuss three of these cost, emotional, physical, and the social costs that service members face after they have fought our wars. The primary topic of discussion will be the “effects of combat on the body” in general, for this is something all service members will experience in some way. This may seem to be a broad and confusing topic, but let us begin. The most common form is counseling and support from family members. While in some cases, fully healing from such events may never take place, this is the best method to date. Now that we have some knowledge and examples of physical and mental effects of combat, let us prepare for the social effects.
