I will divide the students into groups of two or three. I will pair the students with others that work well together and with peer tutors that need assistance. I will ask them to discuss what is alike between the two arctic animals. Allowing the students to compare arctic animals gives them an opportunity to think about their prior knowledge they have learned about the animals and apply it to comparing in literacy. I will ask the students to write down their answers on the worksheet in front of them. We will discuss their answers as a whole group. These activities will teach the students about comparing and allow them to practice comparing with guidance. I will ask “can anyone tell me what we talked about in class yesterday?” (Students should talk about comparing). I will then ask, “Does anyone know what it means to contrast between two things?” I will then tell the students that in class today we are going to be talking about contrasting and what it means to contrast two things.

First, I will tell the students what it means to contrast. The powerpoint that I will have on the board will help the students see a visual on contrasting. I will say “When we contrast two things, it means that they are different from each other.” I will first contrast between the arctic and the beach. I will say, “Since this week we are talking about arctic animals in science, I am going to contrast the arctic and the beach. One of the differences I notice is that the beach has sand and the arctic has snow. In the arctic it is very cold, but at the beach it is very warm.” I will continue to talk about the differences between the two places.
