As the world continues to evolve, so do the demands, expectation and tastes of the guests to hotels. In order for them to remain competitive, hotels will have to understand the changes that are occurring or will occur, assess them and implement effective new policies and procedures to properly deal with these challenges. Some of the current challenges facing hotels are how to deal with the following:
Changing demographics – With the baby boomers population advancing into middle age, this has brought about a growth in the seniors market segment for person aged 65 and over. There is also the increase of tourism to Canada from the older foreign population and with this comes the challenge for hotels to providing suitable accessible accommodation for this aging clientele. Also, hotels will have to provide or adapt facilities to cater to more indoor activities and events to keep this sort of clientele entertained.

The outbreak of infectious diseases can curtail world travel and ultimately affect visitor arrival to Canada, reducing hotel occupancy. Currently there is the threat of the Ebola virus which if allowed to spread to the Western world, would seriously jeopardize travel and tourism. In addition, we saw that after the September 11, 2001 incident there was a decline in travel and visitor arrival to North America, in particular to areas that were directly affected by this tragedy.
