During the four years that the USA was at war with Japan, they wanted to end it peacefully, by signing a peace treaty that meant the two nations would no longer be at war with each other. However, the Japanese refused to comply and wanted to keep fighting with the USA. Thus they dropped the bombs to end the war on Japan. After the first bombing the Japanese still didn’t surrender, therefore the U.S dropped the second one on Nagasaki. If the two bombings on Japan had not forced them into surrendering, the Americans were going to invade the mainland of japan, this was called operation Downfall. This mission was only ever to be played out in the worst case possible. The planed invasion was to be carried out on October 8th 1945 however this operation never went ahead due to the surrendering of japan, two weeks after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. http://www.ushistory.org/us/51g.asp . If japan didn’t surrender after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Americans would have invaded, killing thousands more army men and woman. By choosing to invade japan this would not have been a logical idea, this would have had a large impact on both sides of the war. Japan and America would have both lost many more soldiers, and the USA were not prepared to loss anymore. Also this was only to be used if japan didn’t surrender. Dropping a radiation full bomb on cities is not humane, however attacking Americas main naval base in a surprise attack is also a inhumane act.
