There are many common themes explored in young adult literature. One theme that has been used for a long time is the theme of drug abuse. These novels, which could be called problem novels often follow the protagonist through the beginning of their drug use until the end where they either get clean or die of their addiction. These novels often serve a purpose to educate young adults on the dangers of drug use and help them avoid the devastating fate which many face as drug users. Drug abuse is in no way new and this reflects on literature.
