If societal norms don’t get followed, one would become an instant outcast of society and would be looked upon as weak, girly, and an overall disappointment. There are stereotypes that are found in literature include the limiting of feelings and emotions, the treatment women receive from men, the economic and social standing that men display and finally, how men influence family life. Men have always been represented as a strong individual, who is responsible for working and providing for the family. Stereotypes of this have led men to believe their emotions cannot be expressed, because it is a symbol of weakness. At the same time, women are forced to conform to social norms when dealing with body image in order to appeal to men. The conformation of these is both demeaning and harmful, as the lengths women will go to appeal to men is drastic. At the same time, however, men are also impacted by body image.…

If a man was raped or experienced domestic abuse from a woman somehow, slapping, biting, hitting, while it is true that the woman would be looked at as crazy and unreasonable, men would be expected to shrug off something potentially traumatic. Constantly, society expects men to reach higher standards, in which they’re stronger, faster, more enduring than what may be healthy. Although society seems to be a more patriarchal existence, women are very much more victimized; men do not receive as much help because it is not acknowledged as serious. A common misconception that would provide further insight on this thought is that many people believe that men cannot be raped and that there is no actual evidence to prove that they were.…

Due to the possible ostracization of actually admitting to being abused by a woman, many men are quite reluctant to go the authorities with what are usually legitimate cases of abuse. According to the National Institute of Justice, 835,000 men are abused each year and every 38 seconds a man is abused(Whittaker). Though men are not nearly as likely to be abused by women as women are likely to be abused by men, the numbers are still staggering. Furthermore, there may even be more cases that go unreported that are not factored into the…

Often times, people perceive women as weak - it's seen in the fairytales with the dainty damsel in distress, waiting for a man to save her, as seen even in modern takes of stories like Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty. This sort of submissive take on females has been told over and over since the beginning of our history when men hunted and left women to give birth and gather fruits. The weakness of women has been woven into story after story, until we believe it to be a universal truth and allow men to take dominant roles in society. After all, men like Prince Charming are perceived to be stronger for a reason - men generally have more of the hormone testosterone, which increases muscle mass and makes them look stronger. Women tend to develop more estrogen than testosterone, and naturally less muscle mass than men while being more emotionally vulnerable due to menstrual periods (they are also more prone to depression than males).…
