Challenges that shaped me to who I am today
I have had significant challenges in my life. I came to the United States from the Philippines when I turned twelve and was subsequently adopted by my current mother and her husband in North Carolina. The hardest thing that I faced was understanding how to navigate the complexities of being my education in the United Sates while learning a new language.
Shortly after arriving in North Carolina, I was places in Doris Henderson Newcomers School, to repeat sixth grade. Instructors at Doris Henderson School include interpreters in Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish and as well many other languages. I was the only Filipino and my first language was Ilocano, one of the three major dialects in the Philippines.

Every day was a struggle trying to fit into a foreign culture that I knew nothing of, and which held different values than my own. For example I have struggled with the materialistic nature of American Culture, especially when many of own people from our community had no way to afford many of the things held so valuable here. Yet through all of this, I knew I couldn’t give up, and I would have to lead as an example for my little siblings and other young people in my community. As years pass by I continue to grow and every decision in the family runs through me.…

My dad was studying to become a software engineer at the University while my mother took on odd jobs here and there in order to keep food on the table. In the beginning, as such is the case for most immigrants, times were hard, but my poor upbringing taught me the virtue of being humble; something I pride myself on to this day.…

The three contingencies of social identity I reflect on is race, class, and gender. As they have been a part of my life since the very beginning. Back in the day race was always reflected on me due to the color of my skin, as for being a child of an immigrant, we weren't in a high class stature and I didn't know what that meant till other little kids used to rub in my face what they could afford and I couldn't at the time. My gender also plays a part because I was told on many different occasions that I was unable to do a task because I was a girl and I was weak and it was a man's job.…
