What Are The Challenges Of Attending College

Decent Essays
One major academic challenge I endured, came in high school. I attended a preparatory school in Burlington Vermont, causing me to leave my home and family at the age of 16. Pursing a hockey career was my focus while attending high school, and my grades reflected that. Now, with hockey no longer in the picture, my academics have positively changed for the better. One can see the contrast when looking at my high school, and college transcripts. Although the changed may have not been done purposely, I have found a new appreciation in the importance of academics. If I were to have attend college on a hockey scholarship, I believe I would have never found my new appreciation for education, and will be forever grateful.

The biggest challenge facing potential college students is the means of how they will be able to afford to go. In this day and age most people have to work a minimum of 40 hours per week just to survive. This often doesn't leave room to fund children, or even the parents, to have a college education without taking out significant loans for college. The average college tuition has increased by almost 200% in the last 20 years, outpacing the average household income significantly. If college tuition rates were lowered, there would be a great increase in the number of high school graduates who would be able to afford and attend colleges.…

Academic Argument To be considered a top recruit you don’t even have to display your intelligence all you need to display is the athletic ability that you have obtained. The film “Hoop Dreams” shows the two main characters being pursued by college coaches because of what they could potentially bring to the team not what they can bring to the school. The only time education was important to Arthur and William was when their high school coach or counselor informed them that they had to reach a set score to be able to be recruited and attend the high-powered school. School was never the focus of the film because it only showed them in school for approximately two minutes it primarily took place at their homes or on the court during a game. The…

College is one of those things that is frowned upon if you do not attend, but it shouldn’t be: nearly 50 percent of college students dropout. There is a lot of controversy on whether college is worth the effort, the time, and the money. It’s not, if you think about it, the Federal government has backed over $1 trillion in student loans to young adults who are unemployed, underemployed, and will likely never have the funds to pay it back. Society today thinks that college is the only way to be prosperous because in schools they teach you that it is the only path to take after high school. As a matter of fact, college is not needed to be successful: “not every young person is suited for four years of college… they won’t get much out of it” (Reich 84).…
