Santa Anna was born in Xalapa in the Mexican state of Veracruz on February 21, 1794. Santa Anna's military career, and later prominence in politics, started at age 16 when he joined the Veracruz infantry as a cadet. On March 13, 1811, Santa Anna went with his regiment to Tampico, Mexico, to suppress insurgents working for the separation of Texas. However, his fame and success is mainly attributed to his role in the Mexican War of Independence. At first Santa Anna sided with the Spanish to crush the Mexican rebellion for independence, but when it was clear that he was fighting a lost cause, he switched sides. Agustín de Iturbide, now the Mexican president, granted Santa Anna the status of General. Since Santa Anna now had a military force supporting
