Just a few weeks of being president Reagan's presidency was almost cut short by the bullet of his would-have-been assassin, John W. Hinkley Jr. On March 30, 1981, President Reagan was shot by Hinkley, Jr., while leaving the Washington Hilton Hotel after giving a speech. The President was hit underneath his left arm by a bullet that bounce off his limousine. Once the sound of shots echoed in the air, Secret Service agent Jerry Parr shoved Reagan into his limousine, and then, after noticing the President had been shot, directed the car to the George Washington University Hospital. Though President Reagan recovered he was soon hit with another problem. On August 1981, 13,000 air-traffic controllers went on strike. Though these employees were members of their own employment union to protect their rights, they were also highly skilled workers in high demand for better treatment, pay and a limit on hours in the work week. …show more content…
This resulted in job losses of over 11,000. Reagan won passage of most of his economic program, which included large tax cuts and spending cuts that was found out to be smaller than publicized. Later in the year, the economy fell into recession, reducing government incomes just as the United States was undertaking the protection buildup assured by Reagan.
