The assault of Rodney King ended in horrific acts of angry African Americans all across the LA. On March 3, 1991 Los Angeles police officers while driving at high speed, Rodney was pulled over by police officers and wouldn’t comply and resisted arrest. Although Rodney was in the wrong he did not deserve the harsh beating he received. He was able to settle in court for a large amount of money. All the money in the world cannot fill the hole that was emptied. The Rodney King case is only one of many. Years after that police abuse has been more consistent than ever. Initially these are now African American males that are not armed and being harassed by race. Racial profiling plays a role not just to African American males also females. One incident is very personal to me. In 2012 a friend of mine Rekia Boyd was killed because an off duty cop shot into a coward. She wasn’t armed nor was she guilty of anything. My friend lost her life to a cop with unacceptable training. He had no business shooting in a coward, and being off duty at that. This is a serious matter and cannot be ignored. If we continue to let it happen more black men and women will continue to die. Police departments should revise and reevaluate its training exercises in order to provide a solution to excessive force. New training methods must be provided on situations that usually lead to brutality. Officers need information on the proper use of guns, pepper spray, nightsticks etc. Tasers should be used first before a gun. Also aiming to kill should no longer be a method. Disabling someone that is threating is better than killing someone. Training should also consist of medical assistance when needed. This starts with a more effective training policy. Any compliments of new cases should be addressed immediately, and new trainers should replace old ones. Police officers with a bad history of compliments of violent crimes and force against civilians should be fired and charged and also cannot be eligible for rehire. This solution is achievable and will help discourage police abuse. Cost of the revision of training is small because it just requires new training methods, but can be
