Simone Manuel talked to reporters saying “I definitely think it raises some awareness and will get them inspired. I mean, the gold medal wasn’t just for me; it was for people that came before me and inspired me to stay in the sport. For people who believe that they can’t do it, I hope I’m an inspiration to others to get out there and try swimming. You might be pretty good at it.” She also struggled with pressure from the family, because they all are serious athletes.…
While learning how to swim may not seem very influential simply because it is something most children learn how to do at a young age, it…
The first concept we tied into it is segregation in sports by social class. There are some tendencies concerning sports participation by the children in low-income households. First one is they are more likely to engage in physical contact sports like boxing and wrestling, and second one is they engage in sports that require little equipment and financial demand. Given that Manny grew up in poverty that caused his father to eat his dog, those two tendencies make it clear that Manny couldn’t do nothing but choosing boxing rather than playing golf or tennis that he was not able to financially afford. The second and third concepts are social mobility and sports as a mobility escalator.…
Additionally, the gender switch would generate far-reaching effects in terms of relationship, and it is that that will place everyone on equal grounds. In Athletes in the Pool, Girls and Boys on Deck by Michela Musto capture a little bit of what society would look like if everything was classified based on the capacities on an individual. Musto in her article finds that athletes did not associate swimming with gender. When talking about racing swimmers, Cody stated “It doesn’t matter . . . it’s just, like, the same thing’ if he loses to a girl or a boy” (206), referring to the fact that it did not matter who he lost to because at the end what is really valued are the swimmers abilities.…
Racism in sport in Australia has a long history as stated by the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC)[1]. Race Relationships within the Australian Football community have proven the significance of acceptance and equality over recent times. The AFL have proven that the indigenous race within the Australian football community suffer from a disadvantage as they present absent from management roles within the sport and often are the victim of racism and stereotypical facts. A disturbing example of how a race relationships have previously been encountered within an AFL game is with an Indigenous player by the name of Adam Goodes.…
Stone, Perry and Darley (1997) demonstrated how the racial stereotypes can affect our assessment of the athletes’ performance and how our description of the athletes can demonstrate confirmation bias of racial stereotypes. They studied the effect by asking the participants to rate the attributes and performance of the players after listening a radio broadcast of a basketball game. The white players were perceived as exhibiting less natural athletically ability but more “court-smarts”. The black players were perceived as exhibiting less “court-smarts” but more natural athletically ability.…
Is there a significant gap in salary between those coaches who are the minority and those who are not? Has the “Rooney Rule”, established in 2003, been successful for minority head coaching candidates? The data gathered for this section comes by way of several sources such as ESPN, official sports websites, or industry journals. The history of minority coaches in professional sports has not been given as many opportunities in contrast to their counterparts. People would think that sports have many minorities that mainly African-Americans are practically the playing majority, so it would be more minorities in leadership and managing roles too.…
The Effects of Racial Bias on Sports as Entertainment Sports in the last hundred years or so-have become significantly more diverse in terms of the ethnic and racial backgrounds of their participants. Years ago, the NFL, NBA, MLB, etc. were predominantly, and at a certain point, exclusively, white leagues. White players, white coaches, white owners and even white cheerleaders. And while the sports world, like the real world, doesn’t have to deal with much blatant racism--like not allowing a person to participate in a sport based off skin color--there is still plenty of subtle racial discrimination. This subtle discrimination however, is far from inconsequential because it ultimately leads to a lesser product on the court, field, etc.…
In recent years, the issue concerning transgender athletes being allowed to choose the teams they would like to play on has become an increasing problem. Our generation was never truly aware of how big of a problem this was to the transgender community until just recently when Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner) came out as transgender and addressed the problem in her speech at the ESPYS. This really open our eyes and even infuriated some people, therefore, I believe that there needs to be rules put in place concerning the participation of transgender athletes on a team that is not the same gender as their biologically assigned gender. Transgender athletes should be permitted to play on the team of their choice after agreeing to strict rules and requirements.…
Is TITLE IX helping Women’s Sports Why have women joined more sports? Women have joined more sports since 1972 when TITLE IX first started. Title IX states no person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation. So it’s clear that although some believe it’s not helping women’s sports. Title IX advances women’s sports for two main reasons.…
The swimming contest by Benjamin Tammuz is a story of an Arab boy and an Israeli boy. This took place around the time where there was huge tension between the Arabs and the Jews. There had been much division and segregation amongst the two people. Most of the time, the youth is not up to date with any sort of political conflict or racial division that is occurring at the time. Hatred for the other group is a learned behavior that some youth have not learned yet.…
The Continued Struggle for Equality among Minorities Minorities are in a daily struggle to be treated equally in America. They are going to school to achieve some of the same things that other races have been doing for years. There have been many “firsts” to achieve many things. The first Black President was just recently elected in 2008. There are many things minorities have yet to achieve, including a female President of the United States of America.…
I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…
This class on Race, Gender, Class in Sports has made me think of things that I never even thought of before. I played sports, but never thought anything more than I played the sport and I enjoyed it, I never thought of how we got to this sport I play, or how I as a woman am able to play sports, or even how the game came to be. Some lessons I learned over this course are sports have come a long way, each sport has their own history, sports should rely on performance, to not take sports for granted, that race, gender and class are still the foundation of sports, and that we will always have obstacles to overcome in sports. In sports we will always be trying to strive and improve sports through race, gender and class along with trying to rely on performance to guide us in the…
Girls should be allowed to play the same sports as boys for many reasons. Fewer girls play sports than boys do. If sports were more co-educational, then more girls would be motivated by competition from the other gender. Competing against each other brings out more passion and sportsmanship in both genders. Today’s generation is concerned about equality.…
