Gun ownership is an issue that has been debated since the 1960s. There have been diverse opinions about this topic. The right to gun ownership is the right of any individual to the possession, use and transport of weapons for defensive purposes, sports, hunting, private escort or otherwise, without prejudice to other legal activities to be carried out with the same. Gun ownership is a necessary action that needs to be taken. Thus, there are social, legal and political reasons in favor of gun ownership.
First of all, gun owners stated they own firearms for the following reasons: protection against crime, target shooting, and hunting. Firearms are generally classified into three broad types: handguns, rifles, and shotguns. A gun is a tool and like any other it can benefit an owner. The amendment itself states: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” informed Merkle (2002).
